Simcoe County’s Walk for Suicide Awareness

by Sarah Cairns

Simcoe County’s Walk for Suicide Awareness is approaching, marking the 12th annual event
organized by SCSAC. It’s a chance to unite with the community in support of the council’s vital
work. Stay tuned for updates on the HopeEqualsLife.ca website events section.

Reflecting on my experience at the 11th annual Walk in May 2023, hosted in Barrie, Ontario, I
recall profound moments of unity and healing. As a member of the Simcoe County Suicide
Awareness Council, representing the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit, it was my inaugural
participation, offering unexpected insights and emotional resonance.
Among the heart-warming highlights:

 Participants adorned beads symbolizing the diverse yet interconnected experiences of
loss and hope.

 Generous community donations honoring loved ones, fueling the council’s mission to
broaden support networks.

 The soulful melodies of acoustic guitar, courtesy of council member Lee Matthieu,
imbuing the event with serenity and solace.

 Encounters with bystanders, touched by our message, offering spontaneous applause
and tearful solidarity.

 Acts of love and healing, from petal tossing to flower planting, suffusing the gathering
with positivity.

Key takeaways from last year:
 Pledges for support can be made online or in person at the event, facilitated by a sign-in

 Walking isn’t obligatory; all are welcome to participate in ways comfortable to them.

 While light refreshments will be available, attendees are encouraged to eat beforehand
or bring snacks.

Unsure about attending? Reach out to the council for assistance and guidance.
As a council member, I had some understanding of how the day was organized, but there were
many beautiful moments that I was not expecting. I am very proud to stand alongside members
of our community, demonstrating so much courage, generosity, and healing.
