About Us

About Us

Simcoe County Suicide Awareness Council

Who We Are

We are a grass-roots group of volunteers united around suicide awareness, prevention, support, and education.

Our mission is to provide a culture of hope and togetherness through community events and initiatives in Simcoe County, Ontario and surrounding areas.

We provide opportunities for connection, learning and awareness; to let people know that they are not alone.

The Simcoe County Suicide Awareness Council was declared in Barrie, ON, in May of 2009, with our first walk of hope. The initial plan was to support Simcoe County, however, our support has breached borders into Muskoka, Parry Sound and beyond.

The Survivor of Suicide Loss Support Program started in 1993 in Orillia, running one session a year, until 2014. An additional session was offered annually in Barrie. During the pandemic, virtual sessions were launched and provided greater accessibility. We hope to expand this program to support more people.

Our Mission

To provide a culture of hope and support through community events and initiatives.

Our Vision

A community united around suicide awareness, support and education.

Our Goals

Language is very important - Learn how to talk about suicide with care.
Majority of people who self-injure do not plan to end their life. Self-injury may be a sign that someone is in need of support and care.
In Simcoe Muskoka - suicide is the leading cause of death for those 10-19 years old.
In Canada - 12 People die by suicide each day, that is 4,500 deaths by suicide per year
